Presentation transcript:

What do you know about light and dark so far in the novel? In your tables you have a statement or quotation in front of you. Do not touch this for now. What do you know about light and dark so far in the novel?

Connotations: an idea or feeling which a word invokes for a person in addition to its literal meaning: Dark Light

Read the statement or quotes you have been given. In your tables decide whether it is an example of light or dark. Nominate someone to write your statements/quotes on the chosen side of the board. Copy this down in your books as we go along. DO YOU AGREE WITH OTHER STUDENTS CHOICES? If not then put it where you think it should go in your books and note reasons why. (Justify your argument).

Why does Steinbeck use light and dark throughout the novella? Which characters are linked to themes of light? Which characters are linked to themes of darkness? After Lennie’s death the hill tops are rosy. What does this suggest? Success Criteria: Your point discusses light or darkness in relation to a character/theme. You include a quote. You analyse the language in this quote. You relate this to American society of the time. You are going to practice writing paragraphs surrounding Steinbeck’s use of light and darkness. Use the success criteria to make sure you have ticked all boxes. Sentence Starter: Steinbeck uses light and dark throughout the novel so that the reader becomes familiar with it’s use. The character Crooks is always associated with darkness. This can be seen in Steinbeck’s description of the bunkhouse.
