Imperialist Attitude Missionary work Superiority Strong national pride Empire = greatness Racism One race is superior to others Social Darwinism Missionary work European rule = best way to rid evils

Thursday’s Bellwork Explain how Social Darwinism contributed to the feeling of superiority of Europeans over Africans.

Factors Promoting Imperialism Technology Maxim gun first automatic machine gun Steam engine Able to navigate rivers in Africa easier Able to communicate Medicine Malaria danger Quinine discovery protect Europeans from disease

Inside Factors Help Imperialism Africa variety of languages Variety of cultures Disunity Wars fought among African people Europeans played groups against each other.

Berlin Conference Fight over Africa really bad Conference in Berlin Any European country could claim an area Had to notify other countries and show it could control area No African ruler invited to conference No regard to existing groups Ethiopia and Liberia remained free

Defeated African Rulers Zulu Shaka – leader Boers “farmers” in Dutch Boer War Diamonds and gold discovered Boers trying to keep outsiders out Boers v British Boers lost Changes to come

Student Activity Answer the following question in complete sentences. What can you infer about the European’s attitude toward Africans from the Berlin Conference? Support your answer with 2 pieces of evidence from your notes/book

Teacher Example Answer As a result of the Berlin Conference, it can be inferred that Europeans did not think very highly of the Africans. For example, African leaders were not invited to contribute to the conference. This shows a lack of respect toward the people of Africa. Also, Europeans felt superior to Africans because of the popular belief of Social Darwinism. Social Darwinism fed into Europeans sense of national pride and dominance over “inferior” groups of people.
