Governor of the “Lost Colony”. John White

Much of what we know today about the Algonquian Indians comes from this explorer’s watercolor paintings. John White

What two mistakes caused problems for the John White colony on Roanoke Island? They arrived too late to plant crops They did not learn from the Native Americans how to gather food from the forest.

Why did John White return to England? To get needed supplies for the colony

Why did it take John White three years to return from England? England was at war with Spain and needed his ship to defend against an invasion by the Spanish Armada (Navy).

What clues were left behind on Roanoke Island? All the colonists had disappeared. The fort was in shambles. Buried chests were dug up and broken open The letters CRO and the word CROATOAN was carved on stockade post and tree. No cross was found (The colonists had been instructed to carve a cross into a tree or post if they were in trouble)

List Theories of What Happened to the Lost Colonists. They were attacked by Spanish. They were attacked by Croatoan Indians. They joined Croatoan Indians. They moved to Croatan Island (Now Hatteras Island) They were all killed by Chief Powhatan (Pocahontas’ father).
