International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Application Process Shady Grove Elementary October 9, 2014

Application Distribution Students pick up application packets from Mrs. Askins. Students sign distribution list. Completed Student Information forms due to Mrs. Askins by October 31, 2014.

Application Components Student Information Form NWEA Scores Grades Teacher Recommendations Writing Sample Advanced Course Curriculum Tally

Test Scores NWEA scores in Reading and Math: Total Math Total Reading Spring and Fall test scores are reported and the highest score is used.

Grade Review 4th grade report card 5th grade 1st quarter report card

Teacher Recommendations Mrs. Askins will distribute recommendation forms to teachers based on information provided on the Student Information Form. Recommendation #1 from a 4th or 5th grade teacher that teaches Language Arts, Science, Math or Social Studies. Recommendation # 2 Can come from any 4th or 5th grade teacher.

Writing Prompt Administration Administered November 12, 2014 County-wide. 90 minute administration Students choose one of three writing prompts. Final draft on Writing Prompt Answer page.

Curriculum Tally Includes Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts 4th and 5th grade curriculum considered Advanced instruction consistently in the classroom or through the I/E block.

Process Timeline 10.31.14 Student Information Sheet due 11.12.14 Writing prompt administered 12.5.14 Application packets due to IB office 2.27.15 Response letters mailed 3.11.15 Guided tours for accepted students

Application Review Each component is assigned a maximum point value. Component scores are tallied for a final score. Final scores are ranked in numerical order. Acceptance is offered to the top 225 scores.

Appeal Process Parent submits a written request to the IB Program Specialist, April Craver, within 10 working days from the date of the letter decision. Request must include specific concerns directly related to the application components reviewed. District appeals committee reviews appeal request within 30 working days of the appeals deadline. Findings of the District committee are submitted to the Director of Secondary Education who then notifies parent within 10 working days of final decision.
