What type of characters are in your film? We have to types of characters in our opening title sequence the antagonist and protagonist. Tom is a male character who is the false protagonist in our film ‘The Hunt’. Tom is middle aged British white, working classed man in his 30’s who has given up his job of a lorry driver, to find the man who ‘killed’ family. He is now suffering from depression due to the false killing of his family , that have in fact been kidnapped by an old psychotic friend of his. You do not see Toms face in the whole opening title sequence , this is so that it creates enigmas and makes the target audiences want to go and see who this character is (who is playing Tom) Duke is a British white male, old school ‘friend’ of Tom’s , so they are roughly the same age and probably know a lot about each other due to the face they were ‘friends’ in school. Duke is working class and works as a full time plumber. Duke turned against Tom when he and Tom had a very big falling out, causing Duke to turn psychotic. Duke is not seen at all throughout the whole opening title sequence this is so that the it also creates enigmas and also makes the person viewing this want to go and see what this pshycotic man looks like.

Are they typical or untypical of the genre? Tom is an unconventional/Untypical character as he goes from being the protagonist to the antagonist, this happens because Tom is seeking revenge and wants to kill the person who he thinks has killed his family. Duke Is typical of the thriller genre , because his identity is hidden making it seem a lot more suspicious. He was a typical middle aged man ,as he had two kids and a wife and had a stable job , looking after his family , but due to the consequences of what have happened that has all fallen apart . Duke is a Conventional antagonist because his character isn’t shown through out the whole thing, we did this on purpose so that the audience want to find out what he looks like and what sort of man would do this.

What can you say about their representation I would say that Toms representation is good guy that has turned bad , this has happened because of the fact that he thinks his family have been ‘killed’ when really they have been kidnapped. Even if Tom finds out that they haven’t actually been killed , it will still mess with his head and cause major depression. And could still cause him to go a bit psychotic due to the fact that he actually though his family was killed . Duke on the other hand is seen as an aggressive psychotic character , because to commit the crime he has done is seen as outrageous and so bad that he could also be seen as psychotic. Compared to Tom they are very similar characters, this is because Tom has turned very aggressive and disrupted due to the fact of his family being ‘killed’; so in that sense they are quite similar. Also They both are have been looking for someone/certain people , Toms been looking for Duke and Duke was looking for his family before what happened.

How does your choice of mise-en-scene give the audience clues to the ‘type’ of character(s) you have in your film. The Mise- en-scene of Toms character gives a lot of clues about him , because they could all be linked with depression, we have a tobacco pouch , hinting that he smokes , this could be because he has been trying to take his mind of what has happened. We have leftover bottles on the table this shows that he doesn’t care about the state he is living or what people think and doesn’t mind that he has a messy house. His costume is very simple and is typical of what an elder man would wear (black trousers, and jacket) this made it seem more realistic that he was elder. We used images of a family to show that he is looking for the killer to his family. the family image reminds the audience what he is doing. Duke is not shown in the opening title sequence so there isn’t much I can talk about , but the fact that his house is dark an surrounded by trees makes it a lot more thrilling. The fact that Duke isn’t shown makes his character seem a lot more suspicious and secretive. Also it adds more of a thrilling effect because it builds suspension till we actually see the character. Compared to Toms Character , Tom is shown a lot more than Duke.

Do your characters reflect those you have studied in other films? I would say that our character Tom is similar to the character John Creasy in ‘Man on fire’ played by Denzel Washington ,this is because he is looking for the ‘gang’ or in our case a man, who have taken this 9 year old girl that he was supposed to be protecting due to this he had recently started to create a bond with her. This is like toms character , who obviously has a bond with his family members , and has to go find the man that has ‘killed’ his family, but have actually been kidnapped. This makes it a lot more deeper and includes certain audiences like mothers and fathers. Mainstream media stereotype these characters as very tough characters who don’t have any emotions. But in films like ‘Taken’ and ‘Man On Fire’ you see different sides to these ‘Tough’ Characters, and this shows that they do get hurt and have feelings. You could also say that Tom is similar to the character from taken, because he is looking for the character who has ‘taken’ his family members and ‘killed’ them. And is very passionate in finding the person who has done this and ‘Killed’/taken his family.
