Latin American Revolutions

Haiti Being a French colony, Haiti was greatly influenced by the French Revolution Former slave Toussaint Louverture led a slave rebellion and was then appointed leader of Haiti during its revolution against France Despite being captured by French forces and dying of pneumonia, Toussaint's forces were victorious – Haiti gained independence in 1804

Mexico Mexican revolutionaries were led by an unlikely hero – a Catholic priest named Miguel Hidalgo Due to heavy poverty among the Mexican peasants, Hidalgo decided to lead the revolt against Spain After gathering an army of 90,000 peasants and farmers, he was eventually defeated by a small army of 6,000 Spanish soldiers Hidalgo was executed by the Spanish, but his legacy carried on and allowed the Mexicans to win independence

Pushing Forward After the success of the revolutions in Haiti and Mexico, revolutions will begin popping up all over Central and South America A total of around 10 nations will achieve independence from Spain, France and Portugal over the course of around 30 years

Simón Bolívar Simón Bolívar (1783-1830) was a Creole revolutionary leader from Venezuela He was arguably the most influential revolutionary leader in all of Latin America, and is known as one of the most important politicians in the history of the Americas He personally aided in the revolutions of 6 nations Every city or large town in Venezuela has a main square known as Plaza Bolivar

Bolívar’s War He issued the Proclamation of 1813, also known as the Decree of War to the Death, which permitted the murder of anyone who was born in Spain (peninsulares) After achieving victory in Venezuela, Bolívar then took his army and to fight in the revolutions of Colombia, Bolivia, Panama, Ecuador, and Peru – he also served as president of all those nations Bolívar became the single most important figure in all Latin American revolutions, and is today remembered as a hero Bolívar died of tuberculosis at the age of 47

José de San Martín (1778-1850) San Martín became famous for liberating Argentina, Chile, and assisting Bolívar in liberating Peru While born in Argentina (thus making him a Creole) he actually served in the Spanish military and fought in campaigns across Europe and Africa before returning to South America When he returned to Argentina, he immediately began aiding the locals in their revolution against the Spanish

San Martín cont… After leading the revolution against the Spanish in Argentina, Martín then crossed the Andes Mountains with his army to help fight a revolution in Chile He would also aid Bolívar in liberating the nation of Peru, becoming the first president of that country After serving only one year as president, San Martín returned to Europe to live out the rest of his life
