Political Parties

Political Parties Definition: A group of people who seek to control government by winning elections and holding public office. Functions of political parties: Nominating candidates Governing Informing/activating supporters Watches over public business

Two-Party System In a typical election, only the Republican or the Democratic Party’s candidates have a reasonable chance of winning public office. This makes up the two-party system.

Republican Party Beliefs Include: Conservative Wages set by free market Increase military spending Opposed to raising taxes Less government regulations Private healthcare system

Democrat Party Beliefs Include: Liberal Progressive taxation and raise minimum wage Decrease military spending Raise taxes More government regulations Universal healthcare system
