Principles of Design rhythm movement pattern variety balance proportion emphasis harmony unity

Rhythm: The repetition of the Elements of Art; line, shape, form, space, color, value, and texture. What do you see repeating in both photos?

Movement: The direction in which an artwork leads your eye through a work of art. In this image, the gymnast is seen beginning her tumble off a vault and it is photographed in a way that we see the entire tumble in sequence.

Movement does not necessarily have to do with kinetic energy or the actual movement of objects and things. Movement in an art- work guides your eye across the picture plane1 or composition2. 1Picture Plane: The area or space within one’s own view point. For example, looking through a camera’s lens, you are viewing a picture plane. 2Composition: The act or process of combining things to form a whole.

Pattern: A repeated decorative design. Aside from the design on the floor, what else do you see repeating in this picture?

Variety: A collection of varied objects or things sometime belonging to the same general group.

Balance: When two halves of a composition are visually equal it is symmetrically balanced. When one part of a composition is visually imbalanced it is asymmetrical. Symmetrical Asymmetrical Which side weighs more heavily on the eye?

If split down the middle, our faces are typically symmetrical.

Proportion: The relationship of size, visual quantity, or ratio of one part to another. Which of the two is proportional?

Emphasis: Stress or special importance on one or more focal points in a composition. In advertisements, emphasis is manipulated using color, size, shapes, texture, contrast, etc. What is the emphasis in this advertisement? And what technique did the graphic artist use to create this emphasis?

Harmony: When one or more elements of art work well together in a work of art. Can you see specific elements of art that work well together in these two pictures?

Unity: The completeness or wholeness of an artwork Unity: The completeness or wholeness of an artwork. It is usually a combination of elements and principles of design. Color Shapes Space Texture Rhythm Balance
