Writing an Effective Paragraph

Format Look at page 15 in Grassroots. Review the format! Make sure that your paragraphs follow proper format.

Topic Sentence and Body Read the paragraph on page 16. Find the topic sentence, the body and the concluding sentence. Each one of your paragraphs need each of these elements.

Topic Read page 18. Make sure you understand what it means to have a specific topic and what a topic sentence is.

Ideas for the Body Think of specific ideas for the body of your paragraph. Use examples. Be thorough.

Look at page 23 Make sure that you put your ideas in a logical order. Make sure that everything is related to your topic sentence Plan before you write.

Editing Read the rest of the chapter. Remember that editing is a VERY important part of writing. A paragraph isn’t complete until you edit it. Sometimes it helps to read your paragraph aloud when editing.
