Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease What is Lyme Disease? Lyme Disease is a gruesome disease caused by bacteria usually transmitted by deer ticks. It may affect the central nervous system in many different ways. The most common disturbance is in the areas of the brain which affect thinking. Other symptoms may include: Headaches Mood swings Irritability Depression Marked fatigue

Physical Signs of Lyme Disease Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Physical Signs of Lyme Disease Lyme Disease is most commonly identified by its “bulls eye” looking rash. The rash is present in about 70-80% of infected individuals with Lyme Disease. It could take up to 30 days for the rash to become apparent. The rash is not generally itchy but it could leave the area warm.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Treatment If caught early, patients suffering from Lyme Disease could be treated through using oral or intravenous antibiotics. Antibiotics will decrease symptoms and in most cases, end, and prevent further symptoms of lyme disease. The intravenous antibiotics are more commonly required when the disease affects the nervous system or the heart. If not caught early it will be common for people to have lingering symptoms or have it possibly affect other parts of the body.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Treatment Children who are younger than 8 years old, are usually medicated three times a day for 2 to 4 weeks. Again they are usually given amoxicillin in order to treat the lyme disease. Older children will receive a different type of medication called doxycycline. These children are medicated twice a day for 2 to 4 weeks. If an allergy is present older children will also receive amoxicillin.

Kiwanis Pediatric Lyme Disease Treatment A doctor will decide on this treatment based on the signs and symptoms the child or adult has, if they are unsure but believe it could possibly be lyme disease a blood test will be done. It is possible that multiple blood tests may need to be done in order to make sure that the individual really does have lyme disease and they are treated properly.
