Keith Haring Message Poster

Is this art?

At first glance, Keith Haring’s drawings look like cartoons… Is this art?

And although they are basically upbeat, the messages behind most of the artist’s works are serious and thoughtful. What do you think is the meaning behind this piece? Is this art?

Haring developed a large vocabulary of visual signs (images like hearts, halos, crosses, babies, dancing figures) to express his feelings about modern society.

An artist and social activist whose work responded to the NYC street culture of the 1980s. Expressed world and social concepts of birth, death, and war. Was a muralist who primarily painted on walls of buildings in NYC. Who is Keith Haring?

Social, Political, Personal Let’s brainstorm a list of topics about today’s culture. They can be political, social, personal, school-related… whatever you want. What are some of the big problems our society is facing in the world today? Social, Political, Personal

Sketchbook #3: Pick 3 of the social issues we brainstormed and sketch out three different simple sketches in your sketchbook. Keep it simple. Use recognizable symbols like hearts, stick people, etc. Quality versus quantity Project Brainstorm

Decide on one of your sketches and make a finalized sketch. Eliminate any unnecessary details and make sure the message you are trying to send it CLEAR. Then see Miss Warner for the next step! Project Brainstorm
