1 What do you think of when you see this face?

2 DID YOU THINK OF OBEY CLOTHING?
Obey clothing was based on the art & design ideas of the Artist Shepard Fairey It started as a sticker he created in 1989 while studying at RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) Has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign….and an acclaimed body of fine art Rooted in the ‘Do it yourself’ counterculture of punk rock and skateboarding, but also marketing, and political messaging also took cues from Popular Culture (he was inspired by many pop artists)

5 Shepard Fairey: Who is this guy?
An American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, illustrator and founder of OBEY (clothing) who emerged from the skateboarding scene. He first became known for his "Andre the Giant Has a Posse" (…OBEY…) sticker campaign while attending the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) He became widely known during the 2008 U.S. presidential election for his Barack Obama "Hope" poster. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston calls him one of today's best known and most influential street artists His work is included in the collections at The Smithsonian, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London

7 Remember this?

8 Hmm…. in January 2009, the photograph on which Fairey based the poster was revealed: a June 2006 shot by former Associated Press freelance photographer Mannie Garcia.

9 Appropriation. What is it?
Appropriation (in art) is the use of pre-existing objects or images with little or no transformation applied to them. The use of appropriation has played a significant role in the history of the arts (literary, visual, musical and performing arts). In the visual arts, to appropriate means to properly adopt, borrow, recycle or sample aspects (or the entire form) of human-made visual culture. Notable in this respect are the Readymades of Marcel Duchamp. Inherent in our understanding of appropriation is the concept that the new work recontextualizes whatever it borrows to create the new work.

10 The reaction in the media to Fairey’s Appropriation of the Obama photo, led to these…

11 Here are some more examples of his work:

13 The next slide shows some of Fairey’s pieces that are more geometric/design oriente Do they remind you of anything that we did in the Fall?

14 Some are more geometric / design centered…

15 What are some of the similarities you noticed in Fairey’s work
What are some of the similarities you noticed in Fairey’s work? Are there common themes? ….let’s go back and look

16 Cohesive Colour Palette Common design themes
Cream, Black, Red Common design themes Star Arrow Red rays In his environmental campaign he juxtaposed the beauty of a particular environment with human destruction -Can you think of another artist we looked at that did something similar?

17 Let’s Watch….

18 Your Task… Start by finding some inspiration
Make a board on pinterest and pin images These images could be a combination of Shepard’s work, or photos/imagery that you might use to create a similar piece In order to carve your lino block and make a print, you must first create a 4x6 image inspired by Shepard Fairey You can do this drawing by hand or computer Think about positive and negative space Which parts do you want the ink to hit? Which parts do you want to hand paint after? What should you carve and what should you leave?

19 Practice Prints:  You will need to create 3 practice prints that experiment with materials: These practice prints will be in your sketchbook, and must include… -one regular lino print using one colour of printing ink -one regular lino print using a different colour from the original with the addition of hand painting -one regular print using a different colour from the original with the addition of hand painting and fine liner

20 Your Final Piece… Your chance to get creative! -This is your chance to decide how you would like to best display your print. -what will your colour scheme be? -you could display it in serialization -you could overlap your images -you can decide to print on a magazine, or newspaper, or phonebook, or wallpaper, or construction paper, or tissue, or a painted background (you get the idea!) -Remember, you can use a combination of paint and fine liner, should you wish to enhance your print
