2 Public Art Public art means any artwork that is outside the gallery.
WE are the audience, we see art work in public all the time. We need artists to help us think or remember things. On the next page you will see a list of words. Each word is a reason why we need to see artwork in public.

To address problems To save communities To Beautify To alert us to real world issues To make us smile To help us remember to help us mourn To teach us lessons

4 Examples of public art…

Write a sentence explaining why. If you don’t understand any of the words, use an online dictionary and thesaurus to help you. I have completed the first picture for you as an example.

5 To Memorialize You all know what this is, that’s why I used it as your example. Remember, if you don’t know the word ‘memorialize’ look it up! I think that this piece of public art helps us to memorialize. I think this because it shows soldiers who look brave and heroic, and because this place is called Victory monument, I think it shows a famous battle that Thai soldiers won. This helps us remember the victory, and the people who died.

17 Different cultures Different cultures represented their spiritual, cultural and social beliefs, in different ways, using public art. Look at the two different cultures in the next slides. Print examples of the one that you choose, from this PPT.

18 Ancient Greece Greece was one of the most powerful ancient civilizations. Their architecture shows the power of their democratic society. Using Google look at some more examples of Ancient Greek art and architecture. Greeks believed that their Gods had human form, so that there was no difference in the way man and God looked. They were interested in making people look as physically perfect as possible. There are a lot of Ancient Greek myths that have influenced their public art, such as the snake haired woman, Medusa.

19 Egyptian Art Egyptians made public art that expressed their beliefs in Gods and in life and death. They saw death as being a journey to the next life, and most of their art work reflects this. Use the internet to look at more examples and explanations behind their incredible artwork.
