Lesson on Plant Cells

Plant Cell Nucleus Cytoplasm Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Golgi Apparatus Lysosomes Mitochondrion Ribosomes Cell Membrane Cell Wall Chloroplast Vacuole

Nucleus The nucleus contains most of the cell’s genetic material. It kind of acts like the brain of the whole cell. - All the things that make up a person’s DNA is in the nucleus

Cytoplasm  a gel-like substance or fluid residing between the cell membrane holding all the cell's internal sub-structures .

Endoplasmic Reticulum Rough endoplasmic reticula has ribosomes (makes proteins) on the surface. Smooth endoplasmic reticula synthesize lipids and steroids, metabolize carbohydrates and steroids (but not lipids), and regulate calcium concentration, drug metabolism, and attachment of receptors on cell membrane proteins.

Golgi Apparatus Looks like a stack of pancakes. It is acts like the post office where they put everything together and send the final product and information to the rest of the cell.

Lysosome Lysosomes are like Pac-Mans. They eat or breaks down waste materials and cellular debris. The clean up the animal cells.

Mitochondrion The mitochondrion acts like a power plant or an energy company. It provides energy for the cell.

Ribosomes Ribosomes are like farmers whose job is to raise cows. They build proteins from the genetic instructions held within messenger RNA. They are stuck to the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Others float around in the cytoplasm.

Cell Membrane The cell membrane surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell. It acts like a defensive bodyguard. It allows certain things to move into or out of the cell.

Cell Wall The cell wall is the first line of defense that protects everything inside including the cell membrane. It acts like a wall.

Chloroplast Chloroplast acts like a solar panel. It collects light energy from the sun.

Vacuole Vacuole acts like a storage or rooms where they keep the nutrients, water and waste.
