1 Objective: Students will know the functions of the major cell parts.
Thursday January 7, 2010

2 First of all… What is a cell?
Answer- A cell is the basic unit of life, like a brick is the basic building block of a brick building.

3 Organelles Nucleus Control center of the cell. “The Brain” of the cell.

4 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane
Protects and regulates what enters and leaves the cell.

5 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid that fills the cell, holds the organelles in place.

6 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion
The “Powerhouse” of the cell. Produces most of the energy the cell needs.

7 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Ribosome
Protein factories. Proteins are used to make cell parts.

8 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Ribosome
Endoplasmic Reticulum Transportation system of the cell.

9 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Ribosome
Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Body Package material from endoplasmic reticulum and distribute them to other parts of the cell.

10 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Ribosome
Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Body Vacuole and cell wall (plant cells) Vacuole-Stores water, food, and waste. Cell Wall- Gives plants their structure

11 Organelles Nucleus Cell Membrane Cytoplasm Mitochondrion Ribosome
Endoplasmic Reticulum Golgi Body Vacuole and cell wall Lysosome Clean-up crew. Breaks down large food particles and old cell parts.

12 Nucleus The Brain

13 And in closing…
