(:) Colorectal Cancer Screening Disparities EBAN Experience Session III Sept 16, 2011

Aim Ultimate Goal- Increase Colorectal Cancer screening rates Goal is to decrease barriers to screening colonoscopy for Somali and Hmong patients by improving the patient experience and the effectiveness of colonoscopy preparation. Aim is to identify and fix 6 areas of opportunity that have been identified by our community advisors by the end of the Eban project.

Measurement Qualitative Data via Interviews & Consultations: –Feedback from CAs on translated colonoscopy prep instructions, & patient experience. –Recommendations & learnings from colleagues working with Somalis, east Africans & Hmong in health education groups & other Eban groups. –Consultation with ACS regional rep. on outreach.

Qualitative Data is Suggesting: –Preventive screenings are a foreign concept to many new immigrants from less-developed regions; –Immigrant & refugee elders in target populations are in contradictory position: Traditionally given utmost respect but now highly dependent on youth to navigate new culture and systems; –Multi-lingual & -cultural staff are key to helping our system meet these patients needs; –Overcoming siloed operations within organization & community vital to becoming more responsive. Measurement

Measurement Future PDSAs –Focus groups in east African/Somali and Hmong populations; –Partnering with HP Research Foundation, Wellshare Intl. & possibly UM-SPH to submit grant proposal for patient navigator pilot.
