2 In The Beginning…  Fall 2003 - Planning Committee Meetings  ALAO, AHA, ACS, TFO (SFO), OTPF, ODH, ODADAS – Active Agencies  Used CDC-OSH 4 Strategic Goal Areas  Public Policy Area as a 5 th Goal  Five Goal Areas for Ohio

3 Goal #4- Eliminating Disparities Among Populations Disproportionately Affected By Tobacco Use  OTPF Representative and ODH Representative - Two Advocates on Planning Committee.  Developed Preliminary Objectives Based Upon Experience within Ohio.  Provided Data As Available To Support Objectives.

4 Goal #4 Objectives Revised 2005  Data Availability  Statewide Networks for Communities of Color and At-Risk Populations  Develop Statewide Alliance  Smoke Free Restaurants and Bars  Culturally Competent Youth Programs

7 Barriers & Opportunities  Initially, Statewide Networks were not accepted as objectives.  Planning Committee Structure.  Local Grantees and Communities not included in the beginning.  Include African American Statewide Network in the plan.  Pursue greater support from local grantees and communities.  Solidify partnerships within Ohio.

8 Overcoming Barriers  The Praxis Project - Health Justice Agency  Assessment of 30 people/agencies.  2004 State Tobacco Conference.  Praxis Project Training for Brainstorming Session – October 2004.  Reviewed Michigan’s Case Study Report  Parity Kit

9 Continuing the work…  Brainstorming Sessions on five Objectives – 2004 & 2005  2005 State Tobacco Conference – March 2005  CDC – Office on Smoking & Health – Disparities Supplement Grant – Sept. 2005 Disparities Supplement Grant – Sept. 2005  Official Name: Ohio Cross-Cultural Tobacco Control Alliance – June 2006  $120,000 from CDC – Build Capacity – July 2006

10 Maintaining the work….  Recruit Team Chairpersons for stability.  Encourage Leadership.  Competing Commitments.  Participating agencies need resources and infrastructure to participate.  On-going recruitment required.
