Biogeochemical Cycles. What is a “biogeochemical cycle”?  BIO = “life”  GEO = “earth”  CHEMICAL = “elements – C, O, N, P, S a cycling of nutrients.
BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES
Biogeochemical Cycles Honors Biology. Recall Energy FLOWS through ecosystems ◦Sun  Chemical Energy  Usable Energy  Heat (glucose, food) (ATP) Energy.
How does Matter move through an ecosystem?  Unlike the one way flow of energy, matter is recycled within & between ecosystems  Nutrients are passed between.
 Natural processes cycle matter and nutrients through the biosphere.  Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass.  A nutrient is a chemical.
Objectives To learn to distinguish between physical and chemical properties To learn to distinguish between physical and chemical changes.
 Although energy is essential for life, organisms need much more  Over 95% of most living organisms are made up of just 4 elements 1.Oxygen 2.Carbon.

Unit 5: Cycling of Matter and Energy What topics do you think will be included in this unit?

Biogeochemical Cycles Bio – living organisms Geo – geological processes Chemical – chemical processes *A pathway in which chemical substances move through the living and non-living parts of the earth.

Nutrient A chemical substance that an organism must obtain from its environment to sustain life and to undergo life processes Examples: carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen & oxygen

Can you think of any Biogeochemical Cycles?

Topic #1: Cycling of Water How does water move through the water cycle?

Water “cycles” through the environment The hydrologic (water) cycle is the continuous path of water on Earth. On a white board, draw the water cycle using the correct terms

Water Cycle Simulation Imagine you are a drop of water on your journey through the water cycle…

Conclusion: The water cycle is continuous, but not a step by step process.
