1 13.5 Cycling of Matter: Hydrologic, Biogeochemical, and Nitrogen MA 6.4 Water, carbon, and nitrogen cycle between abiotic resources and organic matter, and oxygen cycles through photosynthesis and respiration.

2 *two page notebook format*  Do Now:  1) What do living things need to survive and thrive?  2) What natural resource is the cause of major wars all around the globe?  3) Where does the water you drink, and the oxygen you breathe, and the carbon in your food ultimately come from?  Monday, NOV 10, 2014  Topic: Ecology  Objectives:  Distinguish between matter, which cycles through the biosphere, and energy, which is a one-way path.  Relate cycling of matter to ecosystems.  Summarize the hydrologic, biogeochemical, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles.  Illustrate the 4 major cycles.  Page 33  Page 34

3 What do living things need to survive and thrive? What do we fight wars over? Where do necessary materials come from?

4 Water cycles through the environment – the hydrologic cycle 13.5 the cycling of matter Life requires a constant input of energy from the sun. Energy enters the biosphere from the sun. But matter – the carbon and other elements we need, are present on earth in limited quantities. No new carbon is coming to us. We have to use and re-use the carbon, water, oxygen, etc already here.
