Clean Air Act of 1963 The Clean Air Act was drafted and signed into law in 1963. CAA is the first federal legislation about controlling air pollution. The act is administered by the Environmental Protection Agency. Effects: Created a research and regulation program in the U.S. Public Health Service. Developed emission standards for stationary air pollution sources. Offered federal research aid and urged the develop of state control agencies. Authorized research in techniques for monitoring and controlling air pollution.

Major Amendments of CAA Developed regulations to limit both stationary and mobile sources. Placed National Ambient Air Quality Standards. [NAAQS] Specified standards for controlling hazardous air pollutants. [NESHAP] *NESHAP = National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants 1990 Amendment Largely increased the authority and responsibility of the federal government. New regulations for controlling acid depositions. Regulations for the issuing stationary operating permits. Addressed issues about ozone layer depletion.
