1965 Amendment required US Department of Health, Education and Services to create and enforce 1970 Amendments required comprehensive state and federal regulations for both stationary and mobile sources of air pollution 1977 Amendments concerned with states that were not national objectives as to auto emissions and measures to prevent air quality deterioration in areas where to air had been previously cleaned 1990 Amendments addressed acid rain, ozone depletion, and toxic air pollution

3 About Function Regulates air emissions from stationary and mobile sources Authorizes the EPA to establish National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) NAAQS set for particulate matter, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and lead Environmental Issues Addressed Air pollution Emission of greenhouse gases Ozone depletion Enforcement/Regulation The EPA is the regulatory agency, because it is authorized to write regulations that explain technical, operational, and legal details necessary to implement laws
