Transition from Year One The children have already visited Year 2 and the teachers have been to visit them in their current classes. We continue to encourage the children to be independent and responsible. We will build on the skills and experiences that children have developed in Year 1. The children will still take part in self initiated, and independent activities. We give the children opportunities to use the outdoor environment.

Guided Reading Use the Read, Write Inc scheme continuing from Year 1. Most children will progress onto non-scheme books. Needs several adults per class every morning!! Training on how the scheme works in early September.

Reading at school and at home Fluency Discussion Expression Understanding

Home reading books Are their own choice from an appropriate selection of books Use the yellow Reading Record to record what your child is reading every day Discussion is as important as reading Some books may challenge the children more than others Some days they may require more support than others Children will continue to choose a book from the library to bring home.

Home reading books Children can change their books daily but as the books get longer the children may need to change them less frequently.

Maths Children will investigate a variety of maths problems linked to everyday life.

What else will your child learn in Year 2? Half termly or termly themes covering all areas of the curriculum Overviews will be sent to you showing what the children will be doing Your expertise/knowledge is very welcome in the classroom

Please sign up in your child's classroom. Parent helpers Always welcome! Please sign up in your child's classroom.

Homework Choice from a selection of topic based and maths activities Fun and designed to involve you Weekly spelling activities

National Curriculum Tests There will be national testing in reading and maths. The tests will take place in the Summer term Your child will not be aware they are taking the tests. Writing assessments are ongoing and based on the child’s work

Thank you for coming and we look forward to working with you next year.
