IRONY What is it?

Irony: a literary technique by which, through characterization or plot, the writer indicates something opposite to that which is stated or shown

IRONY

There are different types of irony: 1. Dramatic or Situational Irony 2. Rhetorical (Verbal) Irony Sarcasm 4. Cosmic (Fate) Irony

Dramatic or Situational Irony The reader knows more about a situation than the character—which gives the statement a second meaning for the reader

Rhetorical (Verbal) Irony Saying the opposite of what is meant. A writer may use this method to reveal a character’s weaknesses or prejudices.

Sarcasm A more crude form of irony The meaning is the opposite of what is said

Cosmic (Fate) Irony Destiny controls people’s fates—where people have little influence or significance Example: a soldier returns from war and is killed in a car accident
