1 Those Three Wishes Short Story Terms

2 Repetition: The reusing of words to emphasize an idea or make comparisons. Repetition can also be used to create a sound or flow if letters are repeated.

3 Irony: There are different types of irony. Situational Verbal Dramatic

4 Verbal Irony This is the contrast between what is said and what is meant. In other words, sarcasm.

5 Situational Irony It is the contrast between what happens and what was expected (or what would seem appropriate).  Note: this is usually very subtle!

6 Dramatic Irony: This is the contrast between what the character thinks to be true and what we (the reader) know to be true. When the audience or reader knows more than the characters we have dramatic irony!

7 Notice anything ironic or unexpected?

8 There is humour in irony!

9 Personification The giving of human characteristics to inanimate and/or non-human things.

10 Direct Characterization
The writer makes direct statements about a character's personality and tells what the character is like.

11 Indirect Characterization
The writer reveals information about a character and his personality through that character's thoughts, words, and actions, along with how other characters respond to that character, including what they think and say about him.
