2 What is Irony? Irony is about expectations.
Definition of Irony: the opposite of what is expected. 2 kinds of irony Verbal Situational

3 Verbal Irony A character says one thing but means the opposite
Also called sarcasm or being sarcastic. Examples “The locker room smells really good.” “Awesome! Another homework packet!”

4 Verbal Irony What is ironic about this statement?

5 Verbal Irony With your elbow partner, give an example of verbal irony.

6 Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected. Example Bill Gates (the inventor of Microsoft) uses an Apple computer.

8 Situational Irony With your partner, come up with other examples of situational irony.

9 Review Something that is ironic turns out to be…
the opposite of what is expected. If it’s the opposite of what is said, like sarcasm, it’s… Verbal irony. If the ending is the opposite of what was expected, it’s… Situational irony.

Identify the type of irony in each reading passage: verbal or situational Explain how you know the writer is using that type of irony.
