Irony

Irony A contrast or an incongruity between what is stated and what is really meant. Or between what is expected to happen and what actually happens. There are three types of irony: Verbal irony Situational irony Dramatic irony

Verbal Irony A character says one thing, but means another.
Sarcasm is a form of verbal irony. Ex. The locker room smells really good! Ex. Awesome! Another homework assignment!

Situational Irony When what actually happens is the opposite of what is expected. Something about the situation is completely unexpected. Ex. A couple appears in court to finalize a divorce, but during the proceeding, they remarry instead.

Dramatic Irony When the reader understands more about the events of a story than a character. You know something that a character doesn’t. Ex. Your parents are proud because you got an A on your test, but they don’t know you cheated.

Questions? It is important that you understand the different types of irony.
