Exploring the Presentation Program The presentation program is software that acts like an electronic outline used to present information. A slide is a screen in an electronic presentation program used to display information. A title slide is generally the first slide of a presentation used to tell the title of the presentation and the author(s). Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Identifying the Parts of the Window A Title Bar is the bar that runs across the top of the screen that lists the name of the presentation as well as the name of the program. The Quick Access Toolbar is a mini toolbar found at the left side of the Title Bar containing shortcuts for common tasks. The Ribbon is the row of tools and buttons found at the top of the screen that perform various formatting tasks. The scroll bar is the sliding bar found along the right side of the screen that allow you to see other slides in a presentation. The Status Bar is the bar at the bottom of the Microsoft PowerPoint window that displays the slide number, theme, layout options, and zoom slider. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Opening an Existing Presentation When you open the file, you will see the title page of the presentation. The only time you need to use the Save As option is when you want to change the name or location of a presentation and you still want to keep the original presentation intact. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Editing the Presentation Along the left side of the screen, there are two options to view our presentation: Slides view and Outline view. These two views can be selected by clicking the tab at the top of the pane. The Slides pane is the method of viewing your slide show as miniature slides. The Outline pane is the method of viewing your slide show as an outline with main points and sub-points bulleted. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Adding Information to the Slides To view the slides, either use your Page Up or Page Down buttons or click on the mini slide numbers. Press Enter to leave a blank line with a bullet Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Printing Handouts Click the Office Button and Print. You can choose to print the entire presentation with all slides, or you can create miniature slides with lines for note-taking called Handouts. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Creating a New Presentation A blank title page appears. Click where it says “Click to add title,” then add in your title. Click where it says “Click to add subtitle,” and add in your subtitle. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Changing the Design Theme A design theme is a preset background design with coordinating text. You can also choose to customize the theme from the Design tab. Click the Design tab to display the Ribbon. Click the More button to display all available themes. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Summary Presentation programs act like an electronic outline used to present information. Graphics such as clip art, photographs, and motion clips can be added to a presentation to aid in comprehension and add interest. Sounds can also be added to a presentation to add emphasis. Presentation programs help the speaker by keeping their thoughts in order and helping him/her to remember the presentation. Presentation programs help the audience members remember the information presented because they not only hear it, but they also see it. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations

Summary (continued) A presentation is also more interesting when there are visual aids. Each screen in an electronic presentation is called a slide. The Page Up and Page Down buttons move you from slide to slide within a presentation. PowerPoint allows you to print handouts for audience members so they can follow along easily with the presentation. A design theme can be added to a presentation to add a colorful background with coordinating text. Chapter 1 Spotlight on Presentations 19 19
