Repaso rápido 12/12/17 State whether the following require a possessive adjective or pronoun: My boots are brown. The boots are mine. Their friends are nice. Traduzcan: 4. The pencil is hers. 5. The books are yours. 6. The magazine is ours.

1. My boots are brown. Possessive adjective: My boots It is an adjective because it describes the object, boots. The possessive adjective is typically written before the object.

2. The boots are mine. Possessive pronoun: The boots are mine. It is a pronoun because it is not followed by the object, boots. Possessive pronouns typically do not precede the object.

3. Their friends are nice. Possessive adjective: Their friends are nice. It is an adjective because it comes before the object in possession.

4. The pencil is hers. El lápiz es suyo. Since lápiz is masculine, the possessive has to be masculine even if she is feminine.

5. The books are yours. Los libros son tuyos. Since libros are masculine, the possessive has to be masculine regardless if you are a boy or a girl. A plural possessive is required because books are plural even if you are just one person.

6. The magazine is ours. La revista es nuestra. Since revista is feminine, the possessive has to be feminine regardless if we are males or females. A singular possessive is required because it is just one magazine although we are more than one person.

Possessives You will now get your work back from yesterday. Numbers 6-10 are graded and each worth two points. Ask questions NOW before we move on to new material.

New material: Demonstratives What are demonstratives? Demonstratives describe which object(s). Example: If you are in a warehouse and someone says, “The box is heavy.” one does not know which box. However, if one says, “This box is heavy” it is clear which box because of the demonstrative.

Demonstrative Adjectives: ESCRIBAN DISTANCE FROM CLOSEST TO FARTHEST MASCULINE FEMININE s. pl. THIS THESE ESTE ESTOS ESTA ESTAS THAT (near) THOSE (near) ESE ESOS ESA ESAS THAT (over there) THOSE (over there) AQUEL AQUELLOS AQUELLA AQUELLAS

That chair (over there) is his. DISTANCE FROM CLOSEST TO FARTHEST MASCULINE FEMININE s. pl. THIS THESE ESTE ESTOS ESTA ESTAS THAT (near) THOSE (near) ESE ESOS ESA ESAS THAT (over there) THOSE (over there) AQUEL AQUELLOS AQUELLA AQUELLAS How close is the item to the person? Is the item masculine or feminine? Restaurant = Restaurante (masculine) 3. Is the item s. or pl.? Restaurante = singular Ese restaurante es muy bueno.

Practice Abran sus libros a página 85. Hagan Actividad 9. Write the sentences with the three possible demonstratives. Ex: El libro = este libro, ese libro, aquel libro Review activity as a class, then continue with presentation.

Demonstrative Pronouns What if you want to say, “That book is mine, but this one is his.”? That is followed by book, so it is an adjective. However, this is not followed by book so it is a pronoun. Demonstrative pronouns are EXACTLY the same as demonstrative adjectives except for the accent marks.

Demonstrative Pronouns: ESCRIBAN DISTANCE FROM CLOSEST TO FARTHEST MASCULINE FEMININE s. pl. THIS THESE ÉSTE ÉSTOS ÉSTA ÉSTAS THAT (near) THOSE (near) ÉSE ÉSOS ÉSA ÉSAS THAT (over there) THOSE (over there) AQUÉL AQUÉLLOS AQUÉLLA AQUÉLLAS

Demonstratives That book is mine, but this one is his. Ese libro es mío, pero éste es suyo. Notice how Ese is followed by libro and does NOT have an accent. Why? Because it is a demonstrative adjective. Éste, however does have an accent because it is replacing the noun libro.

Trabajo Do the work on demonstratives. Complete worksheet for homework if you do not finish in class.
