The Nature of Science Ms. Gravette

What is Science? The systematic study of natural events and conditions to gain a better understanding of the natural world

What is Empirical Evidence? All of the observations, measurements, and data that scientists gather in support of a scientific explanation

Why do scientists need empirical evidence? To support their claims and to improve our lives such as Developing new technology Lessoning human impact on the environment Creating medicines and curing diseases

What are 2 ways scientists can investigate new information? Observation: gathering information using your senses Experiment: an organized procedure used to study something under controlled conditions

Conducting an experiment What process do scientists use when conducting an experiment?

Conducting an experiment They use the scientific method! Step 1: define the problem to answer the question you are trying to answer Step 2: Form a Hypothesis A hypothesis is an educated guess/prediction to the problem you’re trying to solve

Scientific Method Step 3: Plan and Conduct an experiment

Scientific method Step 4: observe and record data It is important to be organized when you are collecting data Step 5: Analyze the data you have collected and make a conclusion

Scientific method What should I do wHen making a conclusion? Restate the hypothesis and the results from the experiment Include data tables, charts, and graphs

Scientific method Step 6: Share your results Share your results with others and relate your results to the real world

Replication vs repetition Replication is when other scientists conduct the experiment Repetition is when the SAME scientist conducts the experiment multiple times

Why is replication important?

Why is Repetition Important?
