1 POD #3 Lab Safety 8/11/15 List two things you should do ahead of time to prepare for a lab. What is the most important rule when performing a lab? What do the following symbols mean:

2 Steps scientists use to solve a problem
The Scientific Method Steps scientists use to solve a problem

3 Problem What we are trying to solve
Always written in the form of a question (not yes or no) Questions begin with what, why, how and when

4 Research Gathering information (data) by reading and/or experimenting

5 Hypothesis Suggested solution to a problem based upon what is already known about the problem An educated guess (based on past experiences and knowledge)

6 Experiment Design an experiment to test the hypothesis
Decide what materials are needed for the experiment List the procedures for the experiment

7 Observe, Record, Analyze
Any observations you make, including all measurements must be written down carefully Data may be recorded in tables, charts, or graphs

8 After you have collected all of the data- carefully study and examine it in order to draw a conclusion

9 Conclusion After studying the data, discover the correct answer to the original problem Check to see if the answer supported your hypothesis Share your results

10 Example Problem: How many drops of water will a penny hold? Research:
Hypothesis: I believe that the penny will hold __drops of water Experiment: materials- procedures-

11 Observe, Record, Analyze
Conclusion
