We are excited to share with you a new family of products that uses Vantage’s state-of-the-art online assessment platform, the Student Progress Monitoring System or SPMS. Today we will introduce the MY Editor Writing Package. This diagnostic tool measures students’ skills related to grammar, mechanics, and usage. The Origin Let’s begin by discussing the origin of the MY Editor Writing Package. 2

MY Editor: Student Workpage The MY Editor tool resides within MY Access! on the student workpage. It is a tool which scans student writing and identifies errors in grammar, spelling, and usage. Teachers comment frequently about how useful they find this tool and how it assists their students in becoming more proficient with editing and identifying potential grammar, spelling, and usage errors in their own writing.

MY Editor: Student Workpage Not only does MY Editor identify potential errors, it also provides suggestions to help students correct them. While it does support student writers, it can’t replace a teacher’s thoughtful grammar instruction.

MY Editor Error Analysis Report In fact, many teachers use the MY Editor Error Analysis Report in MY Access! to analyze the kinds of errors most commonly identified in their students’ writing. In doing so, thoughtful teachers can tailor their grammar instruction to meet the kinds of needs their students express through their writing. However MY Editor is an editing tool and was not designed to provide diagnostic-level accuracy about proficiency in grammar, mechanics, and usage.

The Solution So, where can teachers turn for diagnostic-level measurement of grammar, mechanics, and usage skills? 6

MY Editor Writing Packages Teachers have asked for help, and we listened. Thus, we are proud to release the MY Editor Writing Package to help teachers target writing remediation to middle and high school writers at the developing, proficient, and advanced proficient levels.

MY Editor Writing Packages The MY Editor Writing Package draws from Vantage’s vast database of student writing. We began by looking at the millions of essays students have submitted in MY Access and then identified the kinds of grammar errors students at different levels of proficiency are most likely to commit. With this information in hand, we then drew actual samples of student writing to develop a series of diagnostic questions that teachers can use to identify their students’ strengths and weaknesses.

Common Errors Vantage Learning Test Development specialists grouped these common errors into three targeted diagnostic levels: Developing, Proficient, and Advanced. Two test forms, each consisting of 24 items, were produced at both a middle and high school level. Thus, the MY Editor Writing Package consists of 12 complete assessments and a total of 288 questions.

Vantage SPMS The MY Editor Writing Package diagnostic is delivered through Vantage’s state-of–the-art Student Progress Monitoring System, or SPMS for short. This online assessment platform enables teachers to manage groups, assign online assessments, report on student progress, and deliver targeted remedial instruction. Students and teachers can access SPMS directly from the MY Access login page, using their MY Access usernames and passwords for access!

SPMS: Student View Let’s begin our brief tour at the student level. After logging in, students land on their dashboard. Each assessment assigned by the teacher will be visible.

SPMS: Student View Tests are delivered in a convenient online format.

SPMS: Student View Upon completing the assessment, students have immediate access to their score report. A graphic view highlights student achievement, from red to green. Clicking on each of the bars in the graph displays a more detailed breakdown of the skills in that portion of the assessment.

SPMS: Student View This detailed breakdown helps the student focus on his or her weaknesses.

SPMS: Student View The graphic display is combined with a question-by-question breakdown of the student’s performance. One of the most powerful features of SPMS is also available in the student score report. Notice the iSEEK link that accompanies each question. By clicking this link, students automatically search Vantage Learning's secure, authoritative set of websites for instructional resources that are linked directly to the subject matter of the question.

iSEEK Search Results Need help with subject/verb agreement? iSEEK will find safe, authoritative online resources which target the specific skill tested. These resources include presentations, activities, and reference materials!

SPMS: Student View When we return to the student dashboard, you’ll notice that a red post-assessment folder has been linked to the student’s results.

SPMS: Student View Teachers can post remedial or enrichment materials that are automatically available to the student based upon his or her level of performance. Teachers can post worksheets, websites, or presentations for students to access after they have finished the assessment. One of the resources that is already packaged with the MY Editor Writing Assessment is a question and answer guide.

Question and Answer Guide The question and answer guide provides clear, student-friendly explanations of each correct answer as well as each incorrect answer. In addition, a brief instructional unit provides students with more information about each skill being tested.

SPMS: Teacher View OK. Let’s continue our brief tour of the MY Editor Writing Package from the teacher perspective. Teachers also begin on their dashboard where they can easily view student results.

SPMS: Teacher View Finally, teachers have a access to a series of reports to aggregate student performance data, including a student performance report, item analysis, and grade book report. All student data can also be easily exported!
