Presentation transcript:

What meanings are generated by audience positioning in the ending of ‘Hurt Locker’?

In this scene Sanbourne is telling James that he will die out here and no one will care about him. The cameras positioning is in between the two characters, the camera is positioned like this to show the contrast between the two characters, Swanbourne is scared and wants to go home however James is very calm and doesn’t seem bothered about what's just happened. It can also represent anti war Vs pro war. The close up shots to the characters face allows the audience to what emotions they are going through, with Sanbourne we can see he seems like he is having a breakdown, and James is very calm and doesn’t have any really distinct facial expressions. The audience is positioned close up to the characters to make us feel like we are with them.

In the first still it is a POV shot of what James is seeing just after the bomb has gone off near him, the audience is positioned in the same place as James is, we see what he is seeing. When the bomb went off I thought James would be dead but the shot of the kite reinforces us that James is alive. When the audience is positioned in James point of view it gives us a sense of relief as we know he is alive as we can see what he is looking at. The second still has the camera close up to James face with his eyes shut and the blood on him, this puts the audience in suspense as we are waiting for him to wake up.

- In the first still the audience is positioned outside the truck from the kids perspective while they are throwing stones at the truck, this could represent that the people they are trying to protect don’t even want them there, showing the pointlessness of the Iraqi war.
