Atlas Lee, CBCP Director Of Business Continuity Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery: Solutions For Firms Of All Sizes Atlas Lee, CBCP Director Of Business Continuity

AGENDA Overview of business continuity and disaster recovery Primer of various business continuity and disaster recovery solutions Backup solutions and storage options High availability for hardware and applications Recovery options Scale recovery options to fit the size of the firm

What do you have in place now?

What’s the difference? Business Continuity Planning Process of developing advanced arrangements and procedures that enable an organization to respond to an event in such a manner that critical business functions continue without adverse interruption. (Proactive) Disaster Recovery Planning Defines the resources, actions, tasks and data required to manage the business recovery process in the event of a business interruption. The plan is designed to assist in restoring the business process within the stated disaster recovery goals. (Prepares you to respond reactively)

Various Solutions Software None (no planning, no recovery) Word Processor (basic functionality, but does not provide automated updating) PC Based Planning Software (provides planning content & generation, automatic formatting and importing, but confined to one PC) Enterprise Planning Software (same as above, but resources can be shared by several individuals) Storage Management (provides the capability to manage backup and recovery if you have multiple storage devices and backup options) Virtual Machine software (provisions several operating systems onto one server)

Approximate Cost

Various Solutions Hardware Basic Non-redundant Redundant (raid technology, hot swap disk drives, power supplies, etc) High Availability (mirrored systems)

Backup Solutions & Storage Options Tape LTO (Linear Tape Open technology; Ultrium is a single-reel format targeted at users requiring ultra-high capacity backup, restore and archive capabilities. The Ultrium format enables manufacturers to develop products with up to 200GB of compressed capacity and deliver transfer rates from 15-30 MBps) SDLT (Super Digital Linear Tape with capacities up to 600 GB and transfer rates up to over 70 MBps ) AIT (Advanced Intelligent Tape, 8mm format with capacities up to 500 GB and transfer rates up to over 24 MBps) S-AIT (Super Advanced Intelligent Tape is a ½ inch format, 1 TB of compressed capacity and transfer rate of 78 MBps compressed)

Backup Solutions & Storage Options, cont. Libraries Silos Virtual

Backup Solutions & Storage Options , cont. Disks Disk Array SATA Mirrored

Backup Solutions & Storage Options Storage Solutions NAS (Network Attached Storage, designed specifically for data storage) SANS (Storage Area Network provides high speed, dedicated long-distance network access to large volumes of data) Tape/Disk Libraries (provide higher density and capacity of tape and disk storage along with centralized management) SATA Arrays (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment Arrays provide low cost solutions that can be used for secondary storage and disk to disk backups)

High Availability Fault Tolerance Failover Raid Technology Dual Power Supplies Dual Network Interface Cards Stripping Failover Automatic (may be more expensive, minimum downtime) Manual (less expensive, but there will be downtime)

Telecommunications and Data Communication Considerations Automatic or Manual Switchover To re-route calls or data Multiple Vendors To reduce total reliance on single vendor Multiple ISP Vendors To prevent single point of failure of Internet services DSL Provides an alternative to Frame or ATM Bi-Directional Ring Topology Provides diverse and redundant routing

Telecommunications and Data Communication Considerations, cont. Other Standardization and redundancy in network hardware at each border router location to enhance redundancy Options Remote VPN Wireless (make sure it is secure) Microwave Satellite

Telecommunications and Data Communication Considerations, cont. Options Pagers Cell Phone PDA Devices/Blackberries

Recovery Options Nothing In-house Solution Reciprocal Agreement You will certainly pay later In-house Solution Must have capable personnel and access to applicable resources Reciprocal Agreement A good solution for small to midsize firms that have good working relations with other firms Alternate Office Will need to have the necessary resources in the alternate office to make it work

Recovery Options, cont. Cold Site Warm Site Hot Site Usually pay a monthly fee for the space, and you will need an agreement with a vendor to supply the equipment and have to staff the facility for the restoration Warm Site You may need to provide some of the equipment, and may have to staff the facility for the restoration Hot Site Expensive, but has multiple restoration options

Recovery Options, cont. Co-location Mirrored Site Replica of your systems in a facility that may or may not be owned by you The provision of space for a firm’s telecommunications, network and/or computer equipment on the service provider's premises

Scaling Recovery Options to Meet Your Needs Commitment Cost Recurring Expenses Resources Priorities Recovery Time Objective Recovery Point Objective

Scaling Recovery Options to Meet Your Needs, cont. Low to High

Summary Plan Thoroughness Plan Efficiency Plan Effectiveness Does the plan bring the enterprise back to expected operational capacity? Plan Efficiency Is the cost to recover in line with the financial risk you are exposed to? Plan Effectiveness Does the Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery Plan recover the systems and applications to your expectations?

Consequences of Inadequate Planning Delayed recovery of our business! LOSS TIME
