Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Occupational Outlook Handbook Good for researching jobs, earnings, outlook, education, what someone in a certain profession does

Job Outlook Changing U.S. economy changing from GOODS producing to SERVICE providing economy What does that mean … How have jobs changed? More jobs available or less? Earn more or less? More than 50 million job openings will be available from now until 2018

Employment Projections for Occupational Categories Notice what area is highest and the two lowest areas. Why do you think they are this way?

How has technology changed jobs? Manufacturing? Construction? Farming? Use GOOGLE images to see changes Increased use of technology is resulting in a need for higher education levels and training. Consumer preferences, economic conditions, new technology, and business competition are strong influences on the workforce.

Consumer Preferences What does it mean that DOLLARS VOTE? Workers making the old products may find that their jobs will be eliminated. New jobs would be created by the demand for the new products.

Business Competition What is the difference between … Downsizing Outsourcing Examples of each? Outsourcing- Removes work from one company and sends it to another company that can complete it at a lower cost

Human Resources Dow Chemical had a campaign called THE HUMAN ELEMENT How does this relate to Human Resources? What is Human Resources? Definition? Department?

Human Resource Dept. Goals Seven main goals Identify the personnel needs of a company Maintain adequate supply of people to fill needs Match abilities and interests with specific jobs Provide training and development Develop plans to compensate personnel for their work Protect the health of employees Maintain a productive and satisfying work environment

Human Resources Activities Four categories Planning and staffing Performance management Compensation and benefits Employee relations

Human Resources Activities

Classifying Employees Permanent employee Whom the company makes a long-term commitment Temporary Employee A person hired for a specific time or to complete a specific assignment.

How to Recruit Prospective Employees

Orientation for New Employees There will usually be at least several days of training. The employee may be paired with an experienced co-worker, or mentor. A mentor answers questions and helps the new employee solve problems and build confidence for the new job.

Compensation Methods Hourly Rate Salary Commission Piece Rate What are benefits? Required?

Employee Benefits On average for all businesses, an additional 20 to 40 percent of an employee’s wages is spent on benefits. About $6,864 per year Example: $2,000 / month Blue Cross How much is that per hour (2080 hours per year) Insurance plans including: Health, life, dental, and disability insurance

Performance Management Managers work closely with their employees to make sure work goals are being accomplished as planed. Every employee is expected to meet quality standards as well as work efficiently. Employees must demonstrate effective working relationships with co-workers.

Employee Evaluation Performance Evaluation Purpose How often Look at Mrs. Ewert’s evaluation process

Work-Life Continued Personal time: A few hours each month that can be scheduled for non- job activity. Family leave: policies allow employees to take a leave from work for family related issues Birth, Adoption, Care for sick family member, etc. More on job sharing each person works part time schedules, they share the work and the work space. Some of these strategies for improving work-life relationships cost companies very little. Others do have a cost but often result in reduced absenteeism, lower employee turnover, and happier more productive employees.

Continued Flextime: Allows employees some choice in how their work schedules. Job Sharing: Offers one job to two people. Flex place: that some employees can complete some or all work away from work.

Labor Unions Union rates are steadily declining. Why? Some of the largest unionized occupations are government, education, health care, public safety, and hospitality. Collective bargaining. Michigan now RIGHT –TO – WORK state What does that mean? VIDEO Collective Bargaining- formal negotiation between members of both groups. Unions help keep skills up to date, employee assistance if a business cite closes, improve quality.

Laws Regulating Discrimination

Glass Ceiling The GLASS CEILING? What is it? Every one gets the opportunity to advance.
