2 KEY TERMS Workforce- All people 16 years and older who are employed or looking for a job Downsizing- A planned reduction in the number of employees a company needs (cutting salary expenses) Outsourcing- Sending the work out to another company or another country to reduce cost.

10 Human Resource Department- the department of a business or organization that deals with the hiring, administration, and training of personnel.  HUMAN RESOURCES ACTIVITIES Planning and staffing- hiring & firing staff Performance management- employee evaluations (usually yearly) Compensation and benefits- paying employees Organizational development- employee training

11 KEY TERMS Job analysis- the details of the job duties and skill requirements for a particular job Compensation- the salary and wages for a particular job Benefits- other forms of compensation such as insurance, vacation, and retirement plans Incentive systems- getting paid a commission (bonus) for rewarding an employee for increased production.

12 KEY TERMS Promotion- the advancement of an employee to a higher position (usually more money and more responsibility). Transfer- the assignment of an employee to another job equal in status. Termination- HR staff has the responsibility of firing employees organizational culture work environment labor union diversity glass ceiling

13 KEY TERMS Work Environment- the physical and psychological condition of the work place. Labor Union- an organized group that negotiates pay and work conditions on behalf of all employees. Diversity- people of different races, gender, social, and religious beliefs. Glass Ceiling- a term used years ago to describe the limit place on minorities and women to move up the company rankings.
