Timeline 1931 – Japan takes over Manchuria 1936 – Japan allies with Germany 1937 – All out attack on China U.S. interest? Neutrality Acts? 1939 – Neutrality Acts end for trade with Britain. 1940 – Axis Powers are created Japan, Germany, Italy

Embargo Not selling certain items. No oil or scrap metal to Japan Japan is angry.

Why Attack the U.S.? Only threat to Japan. Japan only needed a little time. One big blow would delay U.S. ability to fight.

December 7th, 1941 Japan attacks U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Sneak attack 2,400 American soldiers killed 19 ships seriously damaged or sunk 200 airplanes lost. No aircraft carriers were destroyed. Dec. 8th, US declares war.
