2 Pearl Harbor USA’s isolationist policy was leaving its military in a state of flux Even though it declared itself neutral – did a lot in the war

3 Pearl Harbor Destroyers for Bases (giving old destroyers to Britain in exchange for bases in the Caribbean) Lend-Lease Act (giving war materials to allies) Cash and Carry (giving war materials to Britain – but Britain had to use own ships to get it) Rearmed Anglo-French forces at Dunkirk

4 Pearl Harbor United States in the way of Japan’s ambitions in South East Asia – Japan needed oil, rubber for war Roosevelt demanded Japan withdraw from Indo-China and stopped selling oil to them Negotiations were for naught

5 Pearl Harbor Sunday Morning, December 7, 1941 – Japan launches an attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii No formal declaration of war on either side – surprise attack Two waves of Bombers attack

7 Pearl Harbor 2350 men killed, 5 battleships sunk, 3 battleships put out of action, 200 aircraft destroyed 29 Japanese planes shot down Luckily for America – 3 aircraft carriers not in port that morning

8 Pearl Harbor Japan thought they had taken America out of the war – Admiral Tojo confident Took 6 months before America was able to make a dent in the war afterward December 8, 1941 – USA declares war on Japan
