1 After Germany defeated France, Japan had taken control of most of France's colonies in Southeast Asia. The US tried to stop Japanese aggression by refusing to sell oil & scrap metal to Japan. (Remember, Japan lacks resources) US Japanese talks were held in Nov 1941, Japan wanted embargo lifted, US wanted Japan out of China & SE Asia-Neither would compromise. Dec 1941, Japanese sneak attack Pearl Harbor, Hawaii 19 ships sunk 200 planes destroyed 2,400 killed US declares war on Japan. Italy & Germany declare war on the US as a response. 1

6 Presidency FDR ran for a 4th term in 1944 and wins! But, he is very ill and dies in 1945. FDR is replaced by his Vice President, Harry Truman. 6
