Annie Bélanger September 2016 Library Report Annie Bélanger September 2016

Library Report Issues-driven template Evaluates overall level of support Information resources Research skills development Research support Get to know your Librarian Library site > Services > Librarians by Subject The Library provides a report which answers section 5.1 under resources. The Library’s report is written by the Librarian for your program. It is reviewed by their Department Head, and then approved by me. If you don’t know who that Librarian is, visit the library website at lib.uwaterloo.ca/ and under services, click on Librarians by Subject The Library is an issues-driven template. It focuses on particular areas of strengths, opportunities for growth and if any direct concerns for the program support. It links out to a webpage of standard support. The report may address information resources, such as access to print and electronic resources and if relevant significant gaps in the University’s collections (and affiliated costs), research skills development, such as assignment support and research skills instruction. It may focus on research support for graduate programs or other forms of support. These sections serve to answer whether the support available to the program is adequate to support the teaching, learning and research goals of the program. As such, it is useful to have as much information about your degree learning outcomes and vision for the programme moving forward.

Information Resources Particular strengths in local holdings Critical gaps How to be remediated Additional cost if beyond feasibility of existing Departmental allocation The online general support page: * Highlights critical resources areas for the program and how these are supported in a high level. For journals and eResources, specific critical titles will be highlighted. Access from off-campus is also addressed. *Since access is critical, more than ownership, the Library reports outlines the many ways that we ensure a high-level of access to our collection as well as collections from other universities. If appropriate, mentions key supporting resources from Ontario and/or Guelph and Laurier. For example, the Theater Archives at the University of Guelph would be of interest to the Drama & Speech Communications Department.

Information Services Research skills development in support of communication degree learning expectations Course integration and collaboration Partnerships to support student learning and research The Liaison Librarian develops information literacy-related activities and materials, in consultation with faculty. These include the development of online modules, research guides and screencasts as well as the preparation of classroom sessions and outcomes-based workshops for students in the program. It is intended that the sessions and workshops may complement, or take the form of, assignments students complete as part of their course requirements. Depending on the nature of the assignments and the instructors’ expectations, these activities focus on introducing, reinforcing, or mastering key aspects of information seeking, critical appraisal , information management and supporting academic integrity. Liaison Librarians draw from the Ontario Council of Academic Vice-Presidents’ Guidelines for University Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations and the Association of College and Research Libraries’ Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. The report also itemized other services, such as in-depth information strategy and research consultation, that the Library and the Liaison Librarian are able to offer.
