THE WORLD IN 1400 The Renaissance

STARTER “We looked at a 15thcentury map of the world to see the Map of the world drawn by Henricus Martellus in 1489 “We looked at a 15thcentury map of the world to see the differences.” 2.Which major oceans and continents are missing from Martellus’ map? Modern map of the world americas asia Atlantic ocean Pacific ocean africa Pacific ocean americas 3.Why are they missing? australasia antarctica

Martellus’ map does not show: The Atlantic Ocean The Pacific Ocean The Americas Australasia Antarctica Why? The map was drawn in 1489. America was not discovered until Christopher Columbus’ voyage of 1492. People did not know about the large oceans and had not discovered Australia and the Antarctic. Remember: In 14 hundred and 92, Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

The Renaissance began in what we now call Italy. Italy is a PENINSULA in southern Europe. A PENINSULA is a piece of land that juts out from the main land and is surrounded by water on 3 sides. Italy is surrounded by: The Adriatic Sea. The Mediterranean Sea.

Europe in 1400

To make an educated guess. Renaissance Italy was very rich. It made its money from trade. Look at the map below. Can you INFER why trade was easy for Italy. Trade is easier by water than by land. Italy was surrounded by water on 3 sides so boats could go to almost any part of Italy. People of Italy could sell their own products to other countries easily. Trade also encourages culture and ideas to spread. NEW WORD INFER To make an educated guess.

So what did they do with all this wealth? Patrons: A Patron was a very wealthy person, normally a banker or a merchant who paid artists to create things. The often did this because they believed it would get them a good place in heaven.

Cosimo de Medici A very good banker. Gave huge loans to the city of Florence. Loved to study ancient Greek and Roman books. Spend much of his money on art and architecture.

Lorenzo de Medici He was the grandson of Cosimo Wanted Florence to be the centre of art and education in Europe. Paid artists a lot of money to create a beautiful buildings, sculptures and paintings.
