Water Pollution

What is water Pollution? Addition of any substance added to water that has a negative effect on the water or living things that depend on the water Can be classified into two categories based on how the source enters into water POINT SOURCE – source can be specifically identified NONPOINT SOURCE – a wide spread source that cannot be tied to a specific origin

Types of Pollution Human Activity – Waste Industrial Waste Chemical Runoff

Pesticides in Water A very small amount of the pesticide DDTin water can build up to Harmful levels in living things. Which organism ends up with the most DDT Pesticides – Chemical intended to kill insects and other organisms (pest) that damage crops EXAMPLE -DDT

Human Waste Sewage in the City Sewage in Rural Waste Overflow of storm sewers due to heavy rain and floods Untreated waste can cause led to disease – Cholera Sewage in Rural Waste Leaking septic tank Classifying Classify the following as point or nonpoint sources of water pollution Sanitary sewer pipe with a leak Salt used to ice roads Open drain in a sink at a paint factor y Fertilizer sprayed onto an orchard

Industrial waste Chemicals Smoke and Exhaust Heat Pollution Production of factory processes Smoke and Exhaust Burning of fossil fuels and coal Heat Pollution Cool Machinery

Chemical Runoff Farms Roads Urban Fertlilizers Animal Waste Oil leaks from cars Salt from icy roads Urban Household waste (grease/oil) Improper disposal (paint/batteries)

Solutions Cleanup List three ways we can cleanup pollution Prevention List three ways of preventing pollution from entering our water system
