WHAT: EMPATHY Empathy – the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Responsibility - Being an empathic educator means taking responsibility for each student’s learning in an equal partnership. Diversity and Equity - Every student comes from a different set of experiences and with a different set of proficiencies and expectations. Ubiquitous – Empathy can be applied in every aspect of our teaching career. September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma

WHEN: Empathy Course Design – engagement, assessment opportunities, teaching style Course Policies – due dates, open notes, extensions, make-up exams In class interaction – eliciting responses, responding to questions, group activity management Out of class interaction – emails, requests for accommodation, grading disputes Evaluation – grading rubrics, comments on student work, final grade calculations, special circumstances September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma

WHO: EMPATHY Empathy should be applied to every student. It is important to have empathy for underprivileged students but also to remember to show empathy even to students of apparent privilege. It is important to have empathy for our weaker student and our stronger students. September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma

EXAMPLE: Empathy Have problems and activities for students of all levels. Respond with encouragement to student comments or questions. Allow leniency on due dates for programming assignments. Open notes or a cheat sheet on exams. Accept (almost) any excuse for a make-up exam. September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma

HOW NOT: EMPATHY Taking the easy route Confuse academic and evaluative authority with power or superiority Dismiss a student’s ideas or comments September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma

Questions Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop September 20, 2017 Fall 2017 UW Tacoma - Active Learning Workshop Institute of Technology, University of Washington - Tacoma
