3. 3 Before teaching a course Observe the diversity –Visible: gender, race, etc. –Invisible: academic background learning styles students’ own characteristics Set your goals and maintain them –for Students to learn the course material –I want to learn from my students Recognize the needs of the students

4. 4 Teaching Techniques Teaching techniques can be used to address different learning styles –provide students with road map(s) –structure the course, but maintain flexibility within the structure –make connections between structure and details –use different teaching aids such as objects, diagrams, the Internet, PowerPoint, presentations, etc.

5. 5 Teaching Techniques Provide a positive learning environment –empathize with students learning the material for the first time –show your support and encouragement teachers cannot do it for students, but can do it with students –maintain good communications with students –encourage mutual respect for each other –welcome comments and suggestions from students

6. 6 Teaching Techniques Provide a positive learning environment in the classroom –mutually agree on rules and goals –help the students feel safe to express ideas –encourage students to express their concerns –treat opinions and questions with respect –teach to the individual –promote critical thinking
