4 COS440 Course Description COS 440 is an introduction to Data Communications and Computer Networking. Topics covered include the physical characteristics of communications networks, media, topology, and protocols. The course will include discussions of wide area networks as well as local area networks. The course will follow a layered approach as defined by the International Standards Organization (ISO) and will draw examples form the now ubiquitous Internet.

5 COS440 Course Requirements 1. Exams 3 prelims or exams Each exam counts 15 percent grade for a total of 45 One 8.5 x 11 sheet of notes is allowed Calculators allowed PDAs or laptops not allowed

6 COS440 Course Requirements 2. Programs and Papers  3-5 programs or papers will be assigned.  These will be evaluated on a scale of 0-10.  all programs or papers will account for 35 percent of the final grade.  Programs and papers will have a due date assigned. Those passed in after the due date will have 1 point deducted in the first week late and 2 points thereafter

7 COS440 Course Requirements 3. Homeworks or assignments Assignments will be handed out for exercises from time to time These are to be passed in and will account for 20 percent of the final grade These exercises are due at class time and will not be accepted at any time following the class period at which they are due

8 COS440 Notes and Comments If any student has some disabilities that might affect their performance in this course I encourage them to speak with me about accommodation needs they might have to help assure success in this class work on programs, prelims, are expected to be the student's own work. The same work passed in by two or more students will not be accepted Incomplete grades are not given without a major reason such as a major illness. If there is a serious problem in this regard please see me as soon as possible. Do not wait until the last week of the semester
