Give to Teachers What Belongs to Teachers Promoting Academic Library Resources to School Teachers Joana Fernandez & Senta Sellers NSU Alvin Sherman Library

The NSU Alvin Sherman Library- Some Background Unique “joint-use” facility, both an academic AND a public library Two primary webpages, one for the public and one for the academic community. We have two websites the academic site in particular is complicated to use. We give training to students and faculty about how to find our resources. We reach out to all education students through curriculum based library presentations. An education student would be taught the many ways to find education databases like clicking on the databases by subject link. Academic library website Public library website

Our Mission: To Promote our Education Resources Specifically our academic education resources to a public audience! So how to reach a public population who might be interested in our education resources with such a complex access path?

Promoting Education Resources How to reach a public audience with ‘academic’ resources? 1. Rediscovered an existing website We rediscovered an existing website http://public.library.nova.edu/teachers/

Promoting Education Resources-Handouts Handouts given out at Advanced Placement Summer Institute, BCPS/BTU Annual New Teacher Orientation, BTU Stewardship Event, Broward County Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Mathematics Extravaganza, and Alvin Sherman Library’s Public Library Services Department. We requested bookmarks from the marking department to be made about the teacher resources website, specifically created for one event. We realized that we had many more public events and teacher events with the Fischler College where we could promote this resource.

Promoting Education Resources-LibGuides Each of these databases is a unique product with its own way to search. We decided to add a lot of helpful information on how to use these database on this guide and link it back to the Teacher Resources webpage. http://nova.campusguides.com/education

Promoting Education Resources-Videos We also reach public users via our library learn videos. These are short how to tutorials created by librarians about a number of our databases.

Promoting Education Resources-Appointments 30 minute appointments Online or in Person Group or individual Member of the Public or NSU Affiliate

Some Unique Resources USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive Lynda.com USC Shoah Foundation’s Visual History Archive Lynda.com-now owned by LinkedIn-video tutorials and learning paths, for a number of subjects: coding, photoshop, software, how to play an instrument, includes learning paths that once completed show up on a LinkedIn profie. USC Shoah’s Visual History Archive contains over 53,000 video testimonials , off-site access only for . Can get a curtesy sign in which we have a the reference desk… we have open public computers-don’t need a logon and we offer assistance at the reference desk if anyone needs help.

Gale Science in Context Curriculum orientated information for assignments and projects on the life sciences , technology, math. Available to public users remotely- so particularly relevant to STEM teachers- attractive interface and its easy to use

Credo Reference Center Database of reference material so you can get basic information about a topic, also you can search for books, topic pages, and mind maps which help you look for a research topic.

Promoting Education Resources: The Future Enhance and redesign the Teacher Resources Website Promote the print education collection Work with public library services to host programming and events
