Good morning! Please write down answers to the following questions – in your spiral notebook, if you have it. Label this “First Four” and date your paper – 8/5/16. How do you define “history”? Why is “history” important? Or why is it not important? List the three most significant events in world history.  Why do you think these are the most significant events?

Group Discussion How do you define “history?” You have 3 minutes to share your responses and settle on the best definition to which you can all agree. Write your group’s definition on a piece of paper to share & post.

An argument about the significant past Two Good Definitions: History is… An argument about the significant past Change over time

What is History Not? History is: Not just a list of dates & facts Not trivia Not conclusive. We continue to argue about it and its meaning.

Why is history important? Or, why is it not? What do you think? 3 minute group discussion Share

Trotter says… History is important because it helps us to understand who we are, and where we can go.

Historical Thinking

Group Activity You are what you eat. What conclusions can we draw? Using the following pictures, what conclusions can you draw about these people based on what you see? In other words, use evidence to make an argument. Each picture is data about a different person. What conclusions could you make about them based on what you see? Write down your group responses.

Historical Thinking Quiz Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? When was World War II? Who is the best musician of all time? Who has been the greatest US president? Why is race important in America? What does it mean to be an American?

Historical Thinking: Levels of Questioning Level 1 - Recall Directly from text Dates, facts, vocabulary Level 2 – Analysis & Inference Reading “between the lines” Draw logical conclusions from known premise refrigerators Level 3 – Synthesis Beyond the text Inquires about value, importance & application

Recognize levels of questioning. This is what we do! Always question texts. Recognize levels of questioning.

Review How do we define history? Historians use significant _______ to support historical __________. What are the three levels of questioning?
