1 Aim: What are the skills needed by a successful history student?
DO NOW: What advice would you give your younger sibling to succeed in their first year of school? NY State Learning Standards 2 Common Core Standards RS 1, 6 and WS 2

I Studying Tips A) Be Organized & Responsible! B) Study Smart! Save and date everything! HINT: We will have notebook checks heh heh heh 2. Write the HW down in the same place every day 3. When absent, find out what the HW is!! 1. Reread your notes. 2. Ask if you have questions 3. Manage your time: break your HW and projects into smaller chunks. Do NOT wait until the last minute.

3 II Cause and Effect Analyzing historical events and separating out the causes from the effects is not always easy! Read the following and draw a chart showing the causes and effects in your notebook: On July 20, 1969, astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. The United States at this time had been competing with the former USSR in the “Space Race” during the Cold War. Perhaps more importantly, President John F. Kennedy promised in 1961 to send a man to the moon “not because it is easy, but because it is hard”.

5 III How to Read Political Cartoons
A) Describe the cartoon. What do you see? What is happening? B) Analyze the cartoon: Which objects and/or actions are symbols? What is the cartoonist trying to say? Literal Meaning: Taking what you read or see at face value. Figurative Meaning: The deeper meaning behind the words/images

6 IV Fact vs. Opinion A) A fact is TRUE information. B) An opinion is a view or judgment. C) When doing research, distinguish good sources from bad sources. Look to experts. Be aware that many websites for the anti-vaccination movement are written by people who are NOT doctors or scientists!

7 Compare and contrast Russia and China.
