Words to Know Allah – god Prophet – person who is given the word of god Muslim – someone who follows Islam

Origins A merchant named Muhammad went to pray in the mountains of Makkah There he received instructions from Allah on Islamic teachings, and the Qur’an [Koran] He taught monotheism, when everyone believed in multiple gods Many called him a liar, but he kept preaching

Basics Muslims believe in the Torah [Jewish Holy book], the Gospel [ Christian book] They believe the Qur’an is their holy book, a continuation of both books It reveals the final revelations for the world Two foundations of Islam: Qur’an: The Muslim holy book, the histories Sunnah: The rules for living as Muslims Moses = Jewish Jesus = Christians Muhammad = Muslims

Qur’an Given to Muhammad from the angel Gabriel Contains prayers and the final revelations of god, to be recited and memorized Written by scribes as Muhammad could not read Official version of Qur’an written in 651 CE Book not allowed to touch the ground

5 pillars of Islam 1. Shahadah: stating that you believe in only one God, and they are Allah, and their messenger is Muhammad 2. Salat: daily prayer, five times a day – dawn, noon, mid afternoon, sunset, and evening 3. Zakat: Charity. Muslims must share 1/40 of their extra wealth each year. 4. Siyam: fasting. Must not eat during sunup during Ramadan 5. Hajj: Pilgrimage. Once in their life, Muslims must travel to the holy city of Makkah
