Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Redemption

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Justification is the judicial act of God, by which He pardons all the sins of those who believe in Christ. Justified = JUST IF I’D NEVER SINNED! Romans 5:1 “Therefore having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Justification means that God treats believers as being fully righteous in the eyes of the law.

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Colossians 2:13b-14 “He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us.” This certificate of debt is the punishment that you deserve because of your sins. Romans 10:4 “Christ is the end of law for righteousness to everyone who believes.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Galatians 3:27 “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” Jesus was fully righteous, and if you are in Him, if you’ve put Christ on in baptism, then HIS righteousness is counted as YOUR righteousness. 2 Corinthians 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption This term at one time was used in connection with heathen rites and rituals that were done to win the favor of pagan gods. This word carries with it the idea of “covering what is offensive.” The word is also about “restoring friendship.” Propitiation is being reconciled to God.

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Luke 18:13 “God, be merciful to me, the sinner!” Propitiation is about receiving mercy! Hebrews 9:5 “And above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat.” Hebrews 2:17 “Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption 1 John 2:2 “He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.” 1 John 4:10 “In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption It has to do with covering sin and reconciliation. The idea of atonement is doing something to fix the separation between us and God. Isaiah 59:1-2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not so short that it cannot save; nor is His ear so dull that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption The English word atonement is derived from the phrase AT ONE, referring to the special united relationship that God wants to have with us. God wants to be AT ONE with us. But our sin messed it up. The reconciliation between us and God does NOT come about because of something WE do. Our propitiation and atonement originates with GOD. He is the One who makes it possible!

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption The noun redemption means “the act of recovering something that had been lost.” The verb redeem means “to buy back.” God has redeemed us because we are precious to Him. Ephesians 1:7 “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Hebrews 9:12 We are not saved “through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.” 1 Peter 1:18-19 “You were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your fore- fathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”

Justification Propitiation Atonement Redemption Justification = being declared righteous. Propitiation = covering our offensive sin and being reconciled to God. Atonement = restoring the relationship that God wants to have with us. Redemption = paying a price to buy us back because we were lost. “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”
