NATO The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was created in 1949 and is a military alliance. The 28 countries (including Britain, USA and Canada) consider themselves as allies and should an attack be made on one of the countries, the others would see it as a direct attack on them. When NATO started, the main threat was seen as the Soviet Union, which had formed the Warsaw Pact (an alliance with other European countries). However, due to a change in global politics, a number of these countries have now joined NATO instead.
